People are most intelligent species on earth, yet can be lost in a basic decision.
Going through life you begin to establish principles and morals. Even as an atheist, if you compare your morals to a religion you will begin to understand that it's not about control, but rather trouble free living and future.
Different religions are notably focusing on specific long-term goal for all of it's followers.
As you follow a religion, it will nudge with it's basic requirements or outlooks what the collective mood should be in relation to your well being, your neighbours, your culture and overall groupthink.
With the most complex organ in the known universe, we can do various things - have imaginary conversations, imagine images or situations, plan and prepare our next steps. By using our abilities, we're improving them. The same applies to bad practices. If you're taught religiously to have certain outlook on other cultures or groups of people, it will be a hardcoded groupthink.
Modern population without a religion rely on "facts" and "opinions" that make decisions on their part, and easiest to influence to follow the modern living as their culture. Having no expectation leaves the gates open for any solution that comes around. That's often why we end up with the choice between the best of two evils.
Establishing your moral code before you ever come across the cards handed to you will show you the reality - "the truth" that allows to focus on the larger picture rather than argue a pointless choice.
Some religions are built on war, others on peace, or just for everyday living like in small countries or islands. Religions also establish cultures that allow for norms to work with those morals, so that what you do and what you decide is understood by others.
Religions are often not mention nor considered as part of everyday life or influence in major cities, but it's followed by billions of people and influences global ideologies.

Christianity is often misunderstood to believe in stories and to devote your faith to praised individuals, but it's far from the actual core beliefs that have more to do with mental spiritual state achieved by establishing balance between actions, thoughts and the future.
On the surface, you will see it's followers praising Jesus, or praying to God. To an atheist it can be cringy, but that's because they haven't found relation of themselves to any of the teachings. Once the similarity to life clicks, even the most devoted atheists or followers of other religions realise that it's more than just words - it's not familiarity to just life, but introduces to the balance of the universe.
Want to detox or lay off digital distractions? - fasting
Want to strengthen relationship with friends or family? - think of kindness
Want to "materialize"? - pray from the heart and understand what you're asking for
Want relationship with multiple partners? - it's established as "sin" to avoid catching deseases, personal problems, a barrior to family development and prosperity.
Want money? - explore your desires, knowledge and purpose you want to give yourself.
Some individuals manage to travel the world without as much as a stable job in their home country. So not every dream needs money. Surely it does make it a lot easier, but at what cost? 8 to 4, or 9 to 5 daily grind. It's a lot of personal time to dedicate for someone else's goals.
Working for someone is rarely a choice, but within an economy it's still possible to make mooney from what you can do, that's the whole point. Except automation takes the soul out of it. e.g. if you want to create custom cups, a factory will easily do few thousand units, when you can do a hundred by hand.
We do need to adapt between pros and cons though.
Just about any modern problem has an answer to it from thousands of years ago.
Trust, truth and faith lighten our spirit - giving us ease of mind, knowing no matter how others see us, there already is an answer which we just need to understand more than just in words. Eliminating worries or friction gives all those around better sense of freedom and creativity to live up to our purpose.

At some point you also need to accept that religions should not really be about "rules", it's about lighting a path that you still need to find for yourlsef. Having everything laid out would be no fun or growth at all.
Talking about knowing where you're going, AI is really good at it, but it's missing the most crucial detail that defines your whole purpose, it's where your soul lies. AI can easily generate practical ways to move forward, but it won't have your multi-decade context to look back at what drives you. So listening to AI is a shortcut to supass, your mind, soul and outsource decision about your efforts. It's starting off as assistant, but at some point people will begin to rely on "the most intelligent digital species" so much, that they will forget what their own identity is and what to do with their life.
The roads seem to be crossing a lot between what we need and provided, most times monetized alternatives.
You're the creator of your life story, don't forget that you're the one that should know all about the decisions you need to take.
